The Shining-first King book I ever read and it scared the holy crap out of me! Luved it! Been reading The King since then for about 20 years! Luv that man!!
ReplyDeleteAs a way to get non-King fans into what I feel really represents his work today? I would say Bag of Bones. It still has some of the frightening stuff that he is known for, but also showcases his brilliant style of writing (which, let's be honest, some of his early work lacks) and his ability to truly understand and portray the depths of human emotion.

ReplyDeleteHa ha ha...lol. I know what you mean about 'The Shining' (the movie) is what scared the bejesus out of me! ha ha I was young when I saw that one. (I know SK didn't care for it very much but let me tell you it rocked me to the core.) There are some books I have yet to read. There are only so many hours in a day, dang it! Unfortunately, I haven't been as avid a reader as I have been lately. I think about all the time I've wasted doing pointless things through the years, when I could have been reading The King! If I only knew then what I know now.... Thanks for your input Constant Reader, keep posting. ;)

ReplyDeleteHi. 'Bag of Bones' did have so much to offer the reader. The entire story had you on the edge of your seat, making it one of his more suspenseful stories. Some of the characters had so many endearing qualities, so much so, that when bad things happened to them you really felt a bit gloomy about it. And there were some characters that I found myself feeling absolute animosity towards. Even the ethereal characters seemed to have depth and substance.

'Dark Tower 1: The Gunslinger' was my choice because I feel so many people have a preconceived idea of what Stephen King's books are about. (In a sense they devalue his work because of the genre he is known for.) Yes, for the most part his books are scary but I feel if they read the first 'Dark Tower' book they wouldn't be put off by anything else they might read in any of this other books. They may just see the real genius in his writing instead of focusing on only the scary stuff. I just thought I would elaborate on why I chose that one.
ReplyDeleteI love the DT series... LOVE it. It is by far, my most favorite work that he has written. When DT 3 ended I nearly died thinking how long I would have to wait to find out what happened with the gang when they rode the insane riddling train Blain (that was a lot of unintentional rhyming!).
ReplyDeleteAfter books 5 and 6 came out, but before the final volume, I dedicated all my free time for about 5-6 months and reread ALL of the DT books and ALL the related books (see this map - http://images.mylot.com/userImages/images/postphotos/1268406.jpg) in sequential order, finishing up just in time to read DT 7. It was an amazing journey.
That being said, the only reason I didn't also pick DT1 as a suggestion for new readers is that at the time I first read it, I nearly gave up on the DT books all together. That original non-revised edition (I read the new one for my marathon... much better) almost lost me. I had no idea what was going and when I got done, I wasn't sure of what the story was even trying to say.
Needless to say I did eventually read DT 2 and that one sucked me in and saved me from making a grave mistake. I understand why you picked it DT 1, and now that the new edition is out, I might just do the same for a new King reader too. Then again, maybe not. I still think I would rec Bag of Bones. It's my standby that I have used for years and whenever I got to library sales, I pick up the cheap paperbacks of it, to give out to newbies. I think if I see DT1 around cheap though, I may have to pick up some of them too.
